Samantha Young has consistently been one of my favorites since I first read On Dublin Street 6 years ago. It was the first time I realized romance could be more than paperbacks my mom would buy when I was a kid and I would sneak as I got older. I’ve read the full On Dublin Street series multiple times as the series continued to roll out. I love the way she combined angst, love, and Edinburgh. I love Scotland, and Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever been, so I was curious if I would love her writing as much when my one of my favorite places wasn’t a main character.
Fight or Flight kicks off in Arizona, where Ava and Caleb first meet as Caleb steals the last first class ticket on their flight. They have several other less than stellar encounters throughout the airport, only to discover they are seated next to each other on the plane where their dislike of each other fully comes to head. During a layover in Chicago they decide to give in the passion they feel for one night then go their separate ways, but happenstance bring them together again through a mutual friend. Although they may not like each other personally, they do enjoy each other in bed so they agree to spend the nights together while Caleb is in town on a business trip. How long will they be able to continue the arrangement without their dislike turning into like?
I liked this book a lot, although Ava and Caleb both irritated me at times (Ava especially in the beginning and Caleb towards the end). Ava is a type A, everything in its place, doesn’t own jeans, Interior Designer. Caleb is an arrogant, bearded, tattooed, successful Scot. They both want to be in charge, and both are unwilling to fall in love and try a real relationship after being burned in the past. The sex is seriously steamy, and the B characters are well developed (hopefully a sequel with Harper and Jamie to come). This was funnier than I generally expect the author’s books to be, although there is still plenty of angst as per usual. I’m giving it 4 stars because the characters were both pretty unpalatable at times and it lessened the over all enjoyment. 4/5 Stars
